Radio Shack

I’ve been a local DJ for my home station for 3 years now and it has got to be one of the most exhilarating, and some days tiring, jobs that I have ever had. I’m up before the crack of dawn, usually around 4:00 am, and have perfected my early morning routine so I can be up and out the door in probably 45 minutes. This comes in really handy when we have to do an event at some remote location that is way on the other side of town.

It is not usually a difficult setup but I really like having the few moments of piece of quiet before I get right into it. It’s nice that we have our station’s tent, table, and banners pretty much ready to go whenever and it’s so easy to setup and breakdown that I can wrap it up probably in ten minutes.

On the Square

Being a new coffee shop in the neighborhood is exciting as well as kind of nerve racking. We’ve got our spot in the mid-town square and it is perfect but we’re still having a rough time getting more than just the random passerby into the front door. I know that flyers were kind of the right way to go to at least get some attention around us but I wanted to prove to our neighborhood, and pretty much everyone else, that a good cup of coffee is right in front of their faces.

My idea, get mobile. We’ve got a couple of tents and traveling bicycle carts (self-made) that we run through about a 15 mile radius of our actual shop. You would be surprised by how many people can’t believe that they would see a coffee cart right in front of their office building. This may be the next big thing for us but I can’t wait to get our bakery up and rolling. Hahaha get it?

At the Art Festival

I'm a photographer who is starting to display his art at festivals, shows, etc. and I realized that it was time to buy my own canopy. I’ve been renting canopies from various venues all over the place and you wouldn’t believe how expensive that can be! So I shopped around online for some prices and I was blown away by how easy/cheap it was to buy my own professional grade canopy. Of course, I had to check out other customer reviews to make sure that I wasn’t just buying something that was going to break in a week.

Now, I can setup a display studio in minutes and show off my work without worrying about my tent crashing down around me or taking hours on end just to get it all to look right. Every time that I setup my tent, I am more and more convinced that I made the right call and I have to say, I am proud of being able to show off my work in it.

Making the Scene

Being the videographer to a news journalist can be an odd job at times. Being in the business you learn that it really boils down to “hurry up and wait” mentality. Once a story pops up, we are flying towards the scene to get there first, setup, and start our take. I’ve been through hurricanes, after court interviews, and more than my fair share of dog and pony shows but every once in a while we’ll get an event that’s as calm and quiet as they come.

We’ll be interviewing a few locals for an hour or two and then move on to the highlights of the place. Most of the time is spent under a tent with all of our equipment and a backdrop setup for interviews. I enjoy what I do and I’m glad that we get to be there for interesting events, but, some days it’s nice to be working while eating fresh funnel cake.
